Tomi Vatavuk's XB Falcon is an exercise in detailed design and homebrewed engineering, with cubes for motivation. Getting a Falcon to sit this low over monster 20x13s takes a huge amount of work! I must have been about 11 years old. The 19s down the front may seem small by comparison, but they still have to clear the bodywork at all suspension positions and provide a home for the mm Brembos.
Inafter years of dreaming and saving, in the end a few hundred bucks and a case of beer landed him this very sedan. Everything between the rear seats and the rear of the boot was cut out and replaced with mini-tubs, drastically raised frame rails and a custom-rolled boot floor. Underneath, the stock diff and leaf springs were turfed in favour of a fabricated nine-inch and triangulated four-link with RideTech coil-overs for handling the bumps.
The vague steering box and linkage were replaced with a RetroRack billet rack-and-pinion set-up, and a set of Stubtech drop spindles allow the sick ride height while retaining suspension travel and geometry. Just like everything else underneath the XB, the big stoppers were far from a bolt-on proposition — Tomi and Ross ended up milling their own rotor hats and caliper brackets to mount the DBA discs and FPV Brembos.
The brakes are actuated by a standard Ford master cylinder and booster, with vacuum provided by an electric pump hidden in the boot. The tower covers transitioned from paper to CAD models, then 3D-printed plastic to check the fit, then finally into CNC-machined aluminium. Speaking of comfort, have a Captain Cook at that interior!
The trim patterns and shapes were inspired by those of the Ferrari Italia and Lamborghini Huracan. The dash is the standard unit, albeit trimmed in Alcantara and filled with Speedhut gauges, and a great deal of effort went into making a heating system that works well and is hidden from view — Tomi even 3D-printed his own heater vents, plenums and tubes.
Cardboard, MDF and modelling foam were used to create models of the door trims and other custom interior parts, from which moulds were made for the carbonfibre end products.
Outside the cockpit, that sensational combination of Maserati and Mazda silvers puts a cheeky twist on the classic Falcon GT blackouts. Of course, what would be the point of all that top-notch gear keeping the chassis rails off the road if there was nothing under the bonnet but a worn old Clevo for propulsion?
Bill stuffed a 9. Details abound inside the XB, like the custom centre console with GT bonnet scoops at the top, the billet shifter surround and the CNC-machined heater control panel. The tubs and fabricated floor meant the rear seat had to be made from scratch, but Tomi made sure to keep it comfortable and usable for cruises with his family.
I used to drive it everywhere when I was at uni; I even drove it around Mount Panorama a few times. Of course, all of that changed when he decided to take the XB off the road for a bit of a tidy-up, and you can see where that idea led! The XB series bore minor cosmetic differences to the preceding model, the XAaimed at giving the car a more muscular stance. First time equipment offerings included standard front disc brakes on all models and an available carpeted interior. It was based on a Falcon fitted, as standard, with a vinyl roof, Fairmont wheel covers, carpet, transistor radio and three thin body stripes.
No records were kept on these cars so exact specifications and build quantities are unknown. Production of the Sovereign is believed to have ended in July Among the limited edition variants of the XB was the John Goss Specialreleased in and named for the race driver who took a Falcon to victory in the Hardie-Ferodo Touring Car race at Bathurst. After a year hiatus, Mad Max is back. He flew here in a Falcon. Amongst the industrial estates and abandoned buildings of South Vancouver, another Falcon rumbles along an empty road. Sheets of paper line the gutter, gusting in the breeze and giving the Sunday morning loneliness even more of a neutron-bomb feel. The flared flanks still wear the livery of the fictional Main Force Patrol with pride. Then and now: The bloodthirsty cars of Mad Max.
The black hero car, fitted with a switch-operated supercharger and huge auxiliary fuel tanks, is half-Batmobile and half- Death Race Oh, it comes from a land down under? Where women glow and men plunder? How interesting. The Falcon was a racer, a brawler, a cop, a movie star, and a scandal-maker. As one of the Commonwealth countries Ford Canada was allowed to distribute to, Australia started out with Model Ts shipped from Canada as knock-down kits.
They even had a factory modelled on the Canadian version, with a roof designed to handle seven feet of snow. In Melbourne. No trip into the post-apocalyptic wastelands would be complete without vegemite. Koala bears are not poisonous. But I digress. Initially, this meant a selection of British-style stuff, which cost more than the Holden General Motors offerings, and was a bit elderly. And also designed by bloody pommies.
After rejecting a Dearborn-styled Australian special based on the Ford Zephyrthe decision was finally made that the first fully Australian Ford sedan would be a right-hand-drive version of the American Falcon.
Production started in mid, in the fancy new Broadmeadows plant with the incongruous snow-shedding roof. This first Falcon, the XKlooked pretty good. Unfortunately, it was a few Matildas short of a waltz. Imagine, if you will, trying to sell a baseball hat in s Australia.
The cubic-inch Cleveland powered the Falcon XB. Holdens still outsold the Falcon handily, but interest was growing in the Ford offerings. And then a bloke named Bill Bourke decided to sell a cop car to the public. It had a horsepower ci engine like a Mustang GT, a top-loader four-speed manual, disc brakes up front and a beefy suspension. The racetrack, Mount Panorama Racing Circuit, had huge elevation changes, and only the most basic concessions to safety.
No worries! Bathurst would become a battlefield for the Falcon, clashes and one-upmanship between Ford and Holden creating muscle cars to match anything that might come out of North America. From here, things just went bonkers. You can see why — Bill Bourke, the managing director of Ford, even had a ci big-block shoe-horned into his personal Falcon. The thing would reportedly light up its tires at a hundred miles an hour.
As an aside, that unique solid nose on the car is an aftermarket clip penned by Ford designer Peter Arcadipane, who stuffed a cu.
